Davido and the troubles of humanity

204

You probably heard that Davido gained over 200 million naira from requests he made to fans and colleagues in the entertainment circle and in some bizarre, but absolutely refreshing, turn of events, the music mega superstar gave everything away in dramatic fashion. He even added about 50 million to make the tidy sum 250 million.

None of the contributors knew that he’ll give the cash away, so we can say they all did it all for Davido and the brand that he represents. The small issue is that of our humanity and where our priorities as a people lie. It’s hard to imagine that Davido will be able to rack in 200 million if he had said, ‘look guys, I wanna do this for the kids.’ I bet you a lot of people won’t even budge.

So, he said send me a million for my birthday and hundreds of people obliged him, got on the bandwagon and followed the trend. I don’t mean to judge or criticize but we know the truth, don’t we?! The same truth about people in society who will do things for people who absolutely don’t need it. They do it for a billionaire-son of a billionaire.

The young girl or the cute young boy are more likely to elicit emotions while the old and downtrodden are just a reminder of what we struggle each day to earth – that things are not as they should be and unlike music videos the Champaign is not always cold.

But there’s also class in the way Davido gave away the largess. He followed an absolutely Nigerian team of five ethnically diverse Nigerians. He didn’t stick to his tribesmen. Something the Nigerian youth are normalizing and schooling the older generation in.

Then again, there is the Oliver Twist Effect. People simply want more. The religious want more. Older stars, like Baba Frayo, want more. It’s craze land out there. Men of God have come out to instruct that he should have tithed before releasing the money. Can you even believe that?

And ‘professionals’ of nothing have also come to analyse the situation they were not even asked to. Don’t you just miss the days of spontaneity and randomness; when things didn’t have to have a meaning before people did them. The days when you could actually meet a great person who would change your story. The day has come for those kids in the selected orphanages.

This should be how things remain from now onwards, people actually changing the world without caring whether they are the president or politicians. This is also a lesson to the people who teach us about God and all his goodness.

Worship of God is not about what you do for an entity who’s in Heaven, that you have never seen while still hating and showing animosity to the man next to you who’s dying of hunger and thirst. Davido has done, in a short time frame, what politicians, captains of industry, men of God (or gods of men), and the do-gooders of this world have never done before.

You should be like Davido!
