Nnamdi Kanu, the leader of the proscribed Indigenous People of Biafra (IPOB), must defend himself in court, according to President Muhammadu Buhari.

The President said this in response to calls for the release of the detained IPOB leader.

Traditional, religious, and political leaders from the South East made the appeal during a town hall meeting with Buhari on Friday in Abakaliki.

The meeting was the President’s final official engagement during his two-day business visit to Ebonyi.

In his words, “I have listened carefully to the various appeals from the elders to the traditional leaders regarding wide range of options.

“As I have said previously this matter remains in the full purview of the courts where it will be properly adjudicated.

“My worry is for our hardworking and innocent civilians, for whom life is already tough and would like to earn a decent and honest living.”

He scowled at terrorists’ barbaric activities in the country’s south-east and elsewhere.

He reaffirmed his administration’s resolve to continue to protect and defend innocent civilians from those seeking to disrupt law and order around the country.

Gov. David Umahi of Ebonyi thanked President Buhari for visiting his state and expressed his support for a political solution to the Nnamdi Kanu’s case.

In regards to his presidential ambitions, the governor expressed confidence that the president will support his bid for the presidency of the Southeast in 2023.
