Chinese official describes media as key to success of BRI

The Deputy Director of the International Training Department of the China International Communications Group (CICG), Feng Yin, has described the media as strategic partners in the success of Çhina’s Belt and Road Initiative (BRI).
Feng stated this on Wednesday when she spoke through an interpreter, Hua Nan, during the opening of a video seminar organised for Senior Executives of Nigerian Media Organisations.
She said that CICG had contributed immensely to marketing the Belt and Road Initiative which 126 countries across the world including Nigeria, and 29 international organisations signed.
It was gathered that the trade volume between China and countries joining the BRI has surpassed six trillion dollars with more than 80 billion dollars of Chinese investments in these countries.
The 82 overseas cooperative parks jointly built by China and the countries along the route have created nearly 300, 000 development opportunities for all the countries.
According to the deputy director, CICG is honoured to organise multiple training for African trainees including 20 information officers and journalists from Nigeria.

She expressed the hope that the seminar would serve as a new platform upon which to promote China-Nigeria relations.
Feng maintained that China and Nigeria shared extensive goals ranging from promoting peace, health, and education, to cultural exchanges.
She said that such extensive goals were to ensure steady and sustainable growth of both countries.
The CICG official said that going forward, the seminar would help tell “good stories’’ about the mutually beneficial China-Nigeria relations.
The webinar, which is also being attended by media officials from developing countries, is part of the training programme under China’s foreign assistance.
The webinar serves as a bridge of friendship and cooperation between the Chinese government and the governments of other developing countries.
Established in October 1949, CICG runs 26 branches in 14 countries and regions, including the United States, Canada, Britain, Germany, France, Russia, Egypt, South Africa, Mexico, Peru, Japan, Thailand, and Hong Kong.
The international communication service of CICG covers six areas: high-end publicity service, external publication and distribution, media and global communication, cultural exchanges with other countries, publicity consulting, and industry collaboration.
It publishes more than 4,000 titles of books in more than 40 languages, edits around 36 multilingual journals in 14 languages, and distributes them to more than 180 countries and regions around the world annually.

Shettima Warns Media Against Romanticising National Challenges

Vice President Kashim Shettima has cautioned Nigerian media practitioners against the growing tendency to romanticise serious national issues, describing the trend as a dangerous departure from the media’s constitutional duty of promoting truth and accountability.
Represented by his Special Adviser on Special Duties, Modibbo Umar, the Vice President issued the warning on Tuesday while delivering a speech at the 17th LEADERSHIP Conference and Awards held at the Old Banquet Hall of the State House, Abuja.
“We must resist the temptation to romanticise serious national issues or frame them in ways that distort public understanding,” Shettima said. “Doing so only weakens the fabric of our democracy and derails our collective efforts at nation-building.”
The Vice President’s remarks came as stakeholders in governance, business, and civil society gathered to reflect on the theme of the event, “Challenges and Opportunities in Nigeria’s Fiscal Federalism.” The conference provided a platform for thoughtful engagement on some of the country’s most pressing issues, with a focus on the responsibilities of leadership at all levels.
Shettima also used the occasion to commend LEADERSHIP Newspapers Group for its consistent contributions to national discourse and its commitment to celebrating excellence in leadership.
“I commend LEADERSHIP Newspaper for the vision to convene this vital discourse and for shining the light on those who have chosen to lead with courage and competence. May we never tire of striving for a better Nigeria,” he said.
The annual LEADERSHIP Conference and Awards continues to be a major event that brings together influential voices to deliberate on national progress and honour individuals and institutions making meaningful impact in society.

UN emphasises importance of press freedom as Israel shuts Al Jazeera

UN emphasises importance of press freedom as Israel shuts Al Jazeera
The United Nations has emphasised the importance of press freedom following Israel’s decision to close broadcaster Al Jazeera’s operations in the country.
“We stand firmly against any decision to roll back freedom of the press,” said UN spokesman Stephane Dujarric in New York.
“A free press provides an invaluable service to ensure that the public is informed and engaged.”
Israel’s Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu said his Cabinet had unanimously voted to close broadcaster Al Jazeera’s operations in Israel.
The move came after Israeli lawmakers approved a new media law widely referred to as the “Al Jazeera law” that gives the government powers to ban foreign broadcasters if they are deemed a risk to state security.
Al Jazeera decried the Israeli decision and vowed to pursue “all avenues” available to protect its rights and employees.
