Bulgarian Interior Minister urges border police chief to resign

Bulgarian Interior Minister Ivan Demerdzhiev has urged the deputy head of the country’s Border Police Deyan Mollov to resign over the migrant trafficking incident in which two police officers were killed.

The incident occurred near Burgas early Thursday.

Demerdzhiev said at a news conference in Sofia that the 47 migrants should have been intercepted at the Bulgarian border instead of having police in Burgas try to stop their bus.

The interior minister said when he took office earlier in August, a reshuffle took place in which  Mollov was tasked with stemming migrant pressure, which was a grave problem.

“He has the competence and experience and I trusted him to live up to this task, since he failed to do so, I expect Deyan Mollov to resign by the end of the day.

“I have ordered the Border Police director to promptly come up with measures for beefing up border security. Last week we planned such measures with the Defence Minister.

“Regrettably, events have overtaken us and we could not prevent them,’’ he said.
