Suspected Boko Haram insurgents have attacked a convoy of vehicles carrying goods and passengers in Bama Local Government Area of Borno State, killing five people and abducting seven women.

According to a report by The PUNCH, the attack took place Thursday on the security-escorted convoy of commuters and good-transporting vehicles very close to the Nigeria-Cameroon border town of Banki in the LGA at about 2:30 pm.

The report says an impeccable source travelling along the Maiduguri-Bama-Banki route, named Babagana Kaumi, confirmed to The PUNCH via an audio message thus: “The convoy of commuter and goods vehicles tan into an ambush near Banki.”

He continued: “One of the vehicles developed a fault, and when such happens all the soldiers concentrate their attention on the faulty vehicle until it is repaired before the journey continues.

“That’s what happened that day; as the soldiers concentrated their attention on a vehicle that developed a fault, the insurgents attacked, killing two commuters, the driver of one of the vehicles and his two assistants abducted about seven women and set the convoy ablaze.”

Kaumi said “Of recent, the insurgents only attack such convoys, snatching money and every valuable, including any good pair of shoes from commuters, leaving them to continue the journey alive and unhurt; but last Thursday, they attacked with anger.”

He said Boko Haram attacks have now become more rampant along the Nigeria and Cameroonian sides of the border.

However, security agencies have yet to issue any statement on Thursday’s attack.
