The Niger State Commissioner of Education, Hannatu Salihu, has disclosed that 31 boarding Schools in the State are not fully operational.

Briefing journalists in Minna after the State Executive Council meeting, Ms Salihu said only 25 boarding schools across Niger are still operational.

Mrs Salihu added that 10 out of the 31 have been totally shut down while the others were asked to de-board their students.

“We have 56 boarding schools in Niger state. We had to shut down 10 boarding schools and de-boarded some of them. The ones that were totally shut down are those in the high-risk areas,” she said.

Mrs Salihu explained that the schools were shut down and de-boarded because of the risk assessment by security agencies, adding there are plans to review the risk assessment and decide if some of the schools would be reopened.

The commissioner said students in the affected schools have been taken care of as they were asked to look for alternative schools to attend, especially the SS3 students who need to write their final examinations.
