The Nigerian Army has reiterated its commitment to safeguarding the country’s democracy and assured citizens that it would not relent in its mandate of dealing decisively with individuals or groups who want to subvert Nigeria’s hard-earned democracy and peace.

The Chief of Army Staff (COAS), Lieutenant General Farouk Yahaya gave the assurance at the opening of the First Quarter Chief of Army Staff Conference and Research Exhibition at the Command Officers Mess 1 Asokoro Abuja on Monday.

Yahaya also commended commanders, officers and soldiers for their concerted efforts, commitments and dedication to duty to ensure success in various operations in the country.

According to him, troops’ adherence to all guidelines and implementation of decisions taken were largely responsible for the success of the last general elections.

On the issue of the IPOB/ESN insurrection in the Southeast, the COAS assured that no group would be allowed to disrupt Nigeria’s democratic process.

In his words, “the peaceful conduct of the 2023 general elections across the country including in the South East despite the sense of insecurity created by criminal elements in the region, is a testament to our resolve to ensure security in the entire nation.

“The Nigerian Army will continue to perform its constitutional roles in collaboration with sister services and other security agencies as well as civil authorities in the region.”

The Army Chief added that the efforts of the rejuvenated joint operations in the South-South have led to the discovery and destruction of several illegal oil refining camps and the arrest of criminal suspects in the region.
