ANPMP seeks effective implementation of National Health Insurance Authority law

The Association of Nigeria Private Medical Practitioners (ANPMP) has appealed to the Federal Government to ensure the effective implementation of the provisions of the newly signed National Health Insurance Authority (NHIA) law.

The National President, ANPMP, Dr Kay Adesola, made the appeal in an interview with newsmen on Friday in Lagos.

The ANPMP is the umbrella organisation for all medical and dental doctors in private practice either as owners or employees.

Adesola told newsmen that although the country had many good and people-oriented laws, the lack of effective implementation was the bane of some of the laws.

He noted that free health care services of the government in the past were often politically motivated, poorly implemented and sometimes lasted a few years.

Adesola said that having more enrollees in health insurance and premiums for vulnerable citizens paid by the government would ensure access to care, lower death rates, better health outcomes, and improved productivity.

He, however, commended the government for signing the law and pledged the support of the association to its success and delivery of quality health care.

It was earlier reported that President Muhammadu Buhari on May 19 signed the National Health Insurance Authority Bill 2022 into law, repealing the National Health Insurance Scheme Act, Cap N42, Laws of the Federation of Nigeria 2004.

Buhari noted that a Vulnerable Group Fund would be set up to ensure coverage of 83 million poor Nigerians who could not afford to pay premiums as recommended by the Lancet Nigeria Commission.

He said that the authority would collaborate with state government Health Insurance Schemes to accredit primary and secondary health facilities and enroll Nigerians into the scheme in order to ensure the delivery of quality health care.

The president said that the new Act would also enable the Authority and state governments to develop information management systems and digital records for better data collection, monitoring and quality assurance.
