Aiyedatiwa Sworn in as Ondo State Governor

In a solemn ceremony held at the Cocoa Conference Hall within the governor’s office in Akure, the capital of Ondo State, Acting Governor Lucky Aiyedatiwa has been officially sworn in as the Governor of the Sunshine State.

The inauguration took place at 5:18 pm and was administered by Chief Judge Justice Olusegun Odusola.

With a sombre acknowledgement of the circumstances leading to his new role, Governor Aiyedatiwa expressed, “It is with a heavy heart that I accept this honourable responsibility of taking over the reins of governance and affairs of our state after the unfortunate loss and passing of our beloved governor and leader, and my dear principal, Arakurin Oluwarotimi Odunayo Akeredolu.”

The swearing-in ceremony was attended by various dignitaries, including other judges, top government officials, the Secretary to the State Government, members of the state cabinet, the State All Progressives Congress (APC) chairman, and members of the state house of assembly.

Governor Aiyedatiwa’s journey to assuming the highest office in Ondo State spanned a year, marked by health challenges faced by the late Governor Akeredolu. Despite an impeachment plot by Akeredolu’s allies in the Ondo State House of Assembly and strong opposition from his late principal’s supporters, Aiyedatiwa emerged as the acting governor.

Controversy surrounded the state’s politics in recent months, prompting activists and constitutional lawyers to call on Akeredolu to transmit power to Aiyedatiwa in accordance with the provisions of the 1999 Constitution.

The demise of Governor Oluwarotimi Akeredolu on Wednesday was a result of complications arising from prostate cancer. Akeredolu, a second-term governor, transmitted power to Aiyedatiwa on December 13, 2023, before embarking on a medical trip overseas, which unfortunately turned out to be his last. His passing leaves a void in Ondo State, and the newly sworn-in Governor Aiyedatiwa faces the task of leading the state through these challenging times.
