The Minister of Agriculture and Rural Development, Dr. Mohammad Mahmood, has praised the International Institute of Tropical Agriculture (IITA) and its partners’ initiative to boost cocoa yields and minimize deforestation in Nigeria.
On Thursday, Mahmood, represented by Mr Frank Kudia, the Ministry’s Director of Extension, made the commendation during the Annual Cocoa-Soils Forum 2022 in Ibadan.
According to reports, the project was initiated by IITA and sponsored by NORAD and other partners.
The minister praised the partners’ cooperation in implementing the Cocoa-Soil Project in Nigeria.
He claimed that IITA and its partners’ “Research for Development and Participation for Delivery” strategy had accelerated the project’s impact.
According to Mahmood, there has been a considerable drop in production and foreign profits due to the issues facing Cocoa production.
According to the minister, the government has taken steps to rectify the matter.
He said the intervention on “Integrated Soils Fertility Management” came at the right time to complement the Federal Government’s efforts to solve the issues hurting cocoa output.
