Agric expert warns Bauchi farmers against early planting

Following the early rains in Bauch State, Mr Daniel Abarshi, Director, Federal Ministry of Agriculture and Rural Development (FMARD), has warned farmers against sowing crops prematurely.

Abarshi issued the warning in an interview with newsmen on Tuesday in Bauchi.

Rainfall was recorded in portions of the state on April 7, according to reports.

Farmers, according to Abarshi, should be cautious and not be overwhelmed by the early rain.

He stated that the rain was insufficient to begin planting crops, and that farmers should rigorously follow the rain forecast issued by the Nigerian Meteorological Agency (NiMet).

Farmers should prepare their farms and wait for adequate rain before planting crops, according to the director.

In his words, “We have to wait until sometime in May when the rain will stabilise for farmers to start planting their crops.”

Abarshi revealed that the Federal Government had initiated sound programmes to enhance farmer support services this cropping season.

He urged farmers to form cooperative societies to enable them to access inputs and other support services initiated by the Federal Government.
