The Comptroller, Nigeria Correctional Service, Nasarawa State, Aliyu Yahuza, says 87 inmates in the state are currently studying at the National Open University of Nigeria, NOUN, Lafia study centre.
Yahuza who disclosed this in an interview with the our correspondent on Thursday in Lafia said the inmates were reading for various degrees in different disciplines.
According to him, the convicts serving different jail terms at the various correctional centres in the state, have decided to study for their Bachelor’s, Master’s and Doctor of Philosophy, PhD, Degrees.
He explained that out of the 87 currently enrolling for the programmes, 78 were undergraduates while eight were is pursuing Master’s degree programmes and one, a PhD degree.
“Apart from these inmates, we also have 81 others preparing to write Senior Secondary Certificate Examinations (SSCE) and 23 inmates preparing for the National Business and Technical Examinations Board (NABTEB), this year,’’ he said.

The comptroller emphasised that educating inmates and helping them to acquire skills would go a long way in refining and helping them not to go back to crime when released from prison.
He appealed to government as well as spirited individuals and groups to assist in paying the tuition fees of the inmates who indicated interest in further studies.
Yahuza also appealed for support from well-to-do residents of the state to enable the service to equip the entrepreneurship centres in the six correctional facilities in the state with working tools.
He said inmates were still part of society despite their incarceration, adding that they needed education and skills to facilitate their total reformation and rehabilitation.
