72-year-old man bags life imprisonment for defiling 7-year-old girl
The Lagos State Sexual Offences and Domestic Violence Court in Ikeja, on Monday, sentenced a security guard, David Jackson, 72, to life imprisonment for defiling a 7-year-old girl.
Justice Abiola Soladoye sentenced Jackson to life imprisonment and held that the prosecution had proved the three ingredients of defilement against the convict.
Delivering her judgment, Soladoye held that the survivor was 7 years old at the time of the incident and during her testimony identified Jackson, a gateman in one of the houses on her street, as her abuser.
“The testimony of the survivor was clear, consistent and coherent under cross-examination.
“The second prosecution witness was a teacher who identified that the survivor was her student.
“She testified that one of the survivor’s classmates had reported to her that the survivor was not feeling well and she was walking in a funny way.
“The teacher, in her evidence, said that she made an inquiry and discovered that the survivor was complaining of pains in her private part and that someone had sexually assaulted her,” the judge said.
Sholadoye also held that the testimony of the survivor’s father was credible and was also corroborated by the evidence of the other two prosecution witnesses.
She said that attempts by the convict to deny the charge did not hold water.
“The defendant is consequently found guilty as charged for defilement of a 7-year-old child contrary to Section 137 of the Criminal Laws of Lagos State 2015 and he is hereby sentenced to life imprisonment,” Soladoye said.

70-year-old man bags six months in prison for stealing mats
A Shari’a Court sitting at Rigasa, Kaduna on Thursday sentenced a 70-year-old man, Jibril Musa to six months in a correctional facility for stealing mats belonging to mosques.
The Judge, Malam Mukhtar Aliyu gave the judgement after Musa pleaded guilty to the offence bordering on criminal trespass and theft.
The Judge stated that the convict had appeared before him in the past for the same offence where he was released with the condition that he would not repeat the crime.
The convict had pleaded for leniency, promising not to steal again but his prayers were not considered due to his history of theft.
Earlier, the Prosecutor, Insp. Sambo Maigari stated that Aminu Al-hassan, a village head in Rigasa reported the matter at the Rigasa police division on Sept. 9.
He said that the convict entered a mosque located on Dan Galadima Road and stole the mats.
Maigari added that the man also went to another Mosque located at Bakin Dogo and stole more mats and sold them to one Aisha Abdullahi.
On her part, Abdullahi stated that she bought the mats for N1,500 without knowing they were stolen goods.
She pleaded for leniency because she had been an honest businesswoman and did not know that an old man like Musa would steal.
The Judge adjourned the matter until Sept 18 for judgment on Abdullahi

Horror in Avignon: Woman Testifies Against Husband Who Drugged Her for Dozens of Men to Rape
Horror in Avignon: Woman Testifies Against Husband Who Drugged Her for Dozens of Men to Rape
In a shocking case that has gripped the southern French city of Avignon, a 71-year-old woman gave harrowing testimony in court, recounting years of abuse after her husband allegedly drugged her and allowed dozens of men to rape her.
“The image is unbearable, I’m lying lifeless in my bed, asleep, and they’re about to rape me,” the woman told the court. “It’s a barbaric scene. They look at me like a bag of rubbish, it’s unbearable, and I don’t know if I’ll ever be able to get up again.”
Her 72-year-old former husband, who she has since divorced, is standing trial, accused of orchestrating the horrific abuse over a period of 10 years by drugging his wife and arranging for other men to assault her. Fifty men have been accused of participating in the assaults, with 18 currently in custody.
According to the indictment, the husband, a pensioner, made contact with the men online. While no money was exchanged, he reportedly gained satisfaction from watching the rapes. The crimes were discovered after the man was arrested for filming under the skirts of women in a supermarket, leading investigators to uncover hundreds of videos of the assaults on his computer.
The woman, who appeared in court alongside her three children, bravely confronted the accused, some of whom claimed they were unaware that she had been drugged and believed she was pretending to be asleep as part of a consensual game.
“These people knew very well what they were doing and what a lethargic state I was in,” the woman testified, rejecting the defence’s claims.
The abuse only came to light after her husband’s arrest, although she had long complained of memory lapses and extreme fatigue, unaware that her husband had been drugging her.
“I was sedated, like before going into the operating theatre. Afterwards, you can no longer remember the operation. That’s exactly what happened to me,” she told the court.
While 72 men were recorded assaulting the woman, authorities have been unable to identify all the perpetrators from the videos. The trial continues, with most of the accused having admitted to their involvement.
