The commissioner for education Adamawa State, Wilbina Jackson said 2,000 qualified teachers are soon to be recruited into the state civil service to reinforce the teaching quality in the state.

Wilbina lamented that the teaching quality in the state has been in a deplorable state in recent years and it has adversely affected the students’ performance while writing WAEC and NECO examinations.

She said after lawmakers approved the request by the state governor Ahmadu Fintiri, to employ 2,000 teachers, it received no fewer than 40,800 applications for the 2,000 available vacancies advertised by the ministry.

The deputy permanent secretary, Ministry of Education, Stephen Sunday, who serves as the chairman of the recruitment and screening committee, further, noted that the number of applicants has been reduced to 4,685 candidates after a painstaking and pragmatic screening process to avoid compromising the quality of teachers to be employed into the teaching corps.

“We are taking a more painstaking and pragmatic approach because of what we found on the ground. In previous years, a lot of persons became teachers when they can not even write or teach. That is why our students are failing their exams. We want to change that scenario, now”
