Tinubu Set to Hold Talks with UAE Leaders on Visa, Diplomatic Disputes

In an effort to address the ongoing diplomatic tensions between Nigeria and the United Arab Emirates (UAE), President Bola Tinubu is scheduled to engage in high-level discussions with UAE leadership today at 5 p.m. UAE time.

The diplomatic row stems from multiple issues, including the suspension of Emirates Airline flights to Nigeria, visa bans imposed by the UAE on Nigerian travellers in October 2022, and Nigeria’s alleged failure to repatriate substantial amounts of trapped funds. These issues have strained relations between the two nations.

To pave the way for this crucial meeting, Festus Keyamo, Nigeria’s Minister for Aviation and Aerospace Management, made a trip to the Middle Eastern country on Sunday night to meet with the President who had a stopover after exiting the G20 summit in India.

The suspension of Emirates Airlines flights to Nigeria had a domino effect, leading Nigerian carrier Air Peace to halt its operations in Dubai due to the UAE’s suspension of visa issuance to prospective travellers from Nigeria.

In an attempt to find a resolution, President Tinubu met with Salem Saeed Al-Shamsi, the UAE Ambassador to Nigeria, at Aso Rock last month. During the meeting, the President emphasized the need for a swift resolution of issues concerning Emirates Airline’s operations and the issuance of visas to Nigerians. He even expressed his willingness to personally intervene if necessary.

On Sunday, the Presidential spokesperson, Ajuri Ngelale, officially announced President Tinubu’s upcoming meeting with UAE authorities to address these pressing concerns.

This meeting aims to restore amicable relations between the two nations and resolve the lingering issues affecting both Nigerian travellers and the aviation sector.
