Pres. Buhari calls for safe keep of returned Benin artefacts

President Muhammadu Buhari has enjoined Oba Ewuare II of Benin and the palace to ensure the safe keep of the returned Benin artefacts from the United Kingdom (UK).
Buhari stated this in Benin City during the return of the two artefacts to the royal father in his palace.
The president, who was represented by Nigeria’s High Commissioner to the UK, Sarafa Isola, said that the return of the artefacts was a breakthrough.
According to him, it is a breakthrough because Nigeria and other African countries are working to repossess African artworks currently domicile abroad.
“Our part is to ensure that these highly-prized objects are preserved following global best practices.
“This will undoubtedly assist in the sustained campaign to return and repossess the remaining Benin artefacts as well as other Nigerian and African artefacts domiciled across the globe currently.
“I have the privilege to legally transfer the two repossessed Benin artefacts, the conqueror bronze statue cockerel, “Okpa”, and an ancestral head, “Uhunwun Elao” to Oba of Benin, on behalf of the president and we are also doing the legal transfer,” he said.
He said Nigeria took possession of the artefacts on Oct. 27 and Oct. 28 at the Jesus College in England and the University of Ibadan in Scotland.
The president advised that more emphasis be placed on the return of artefacts rather than the circumstances leading to their removal, as the demand for the return continued.
“My presence in Benin kingdom today is in the fulfilment of the desire of the express directive from President Muhammadu Buhari to return the repossessed artefact to where they originally belong,” the representative added.
He said that the sovereignty of the artefacts, which were taken away from the Benin kingdom in 1897, was vested in the kingdom, under the then Oba Onveramen Nogbaise.
According to him, the sovereignty is now vested in the President of the Federal Republic of Nigeria by the constitution, to transfer the artefacts to the palace of Oba of Benin
On his part, Oba Ewuare II said that the return of the artefacts, which coincided with his coronation and birthday anniversary, signified a new era in Benin history and civilisation.
The traditional ruler said that the artefacts had been returned contrary to speculations that they would be confined and kept away from public view.
“There will be no restriction, as the palace is already collaborating with the Federal Government, through National Commission for Museums and Monuments (NCMM), to build Benin Royal Museum to house returned artworks.
“The museum will be open to tourists and researchers,” he said.
The Oba appealed for financial assistance through specialised grants in setting up small and medium scale enterprises in Benin, including ICT training to support the active engagement of youths
Such support, he said, would help in minimising illegal trafficking to Europe, adding that human development would be the best way the kingdom could be compensated for events of the past. (NAN)

The meeting was attended by members of the State and National Assembly from Borno State, and officials of the Cameroonian Far North region, led by Gov. Midjiyawa Bakari.
This followed the inauguration of the Banki International Cattle Market, a Memorial Secondary School, and a government lodge in the area.

Wike’s projects beaming light of hope on rural communities – Etsu Kwali

Mr Luka Nizassan, Etsu of Kwali, Kwali Area Council of the Federal Capital Territory (FCT), says FCT Minister Nyesom Wike’s rural road projects are beaming a light of hope on rural communities.
Nizassan stated this while reacting to the newly inaugurated 11-kilometre Yangoji – Sukuku – Ebbo Road in the area council executed by the Wike-led FCT Administration.
He told the News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) in Abuja on Wednesday, that the communities contribute 30 per cent of food production to the Kwali Area Council.
He described the road project as the most impactful project undertaken by the Wike-led FCT Administration to transform rural communities.
According to him, the construction of the road has renewed the hope and trust of his people in President Bola Tinubu-led federal government and the commitment to deliver good governance to the people.
“No one would have thought that these communities would receive such massive infrastructural intervention until Wike beamed the light of hope on us.
“This road will increase agricultural production by enhancing the movement of farm machines and reducing the cost of transporting agricultural inputs.
“The communities are now accessible for businesses and the evacuation of agricultural products to larger markets, thereby, increasing the economic value of agricultural products.
“This will have a direct bearing on food security and poverty reduction.”
The traditional ruler added that one of the immediate benefits of the road was the significant improvement of security in the area.
He explained that the communities were hitherto prone to kidnappings and other security challenges.
“The road has now provided security agencies the needed access to patrol and respond to distress calls promptly, thus, de-escalating the activities of criminal elements in the area,” he said.
NAN reports that the FCT Minister had on Monday begun the inauguration of completed road projects in rural communities across the six area councils of the territory, beginning with a five-kilometre road in Abaji Area Council.
Wike, said while inaugurating the 11-kilometre Yangoji–Sukuku–Ebo Road on Tuesday, that the gesture was part of Tinubu’s commitment to develop rural communities.
