PDP chairman in Lagos State shuns second term of office

Published

PDP chairman in Lagos State, Adedeji Doherty, said in Lagos on Friday that he would not run for a second term of office.

“I remain in PDP but will not run for a second term as PDP Lagos State Chairman,’’ he said in a statement.

The party’s state congress is scheduled to hold in September.

“My experience as chairman over the years has been eventful and has taught me more about life, especially as it relates to my relationship with God.

“I am staying out of the race as a sacrifice I have to make in order to create the emergence of a new team of administrators; those I believe should ultimately bring a semblance of peace and unity to the party,’’ he said.

Doherty decried numerous crises periods within the party as well as the sudden death of important members of the party.

He prayed for the repose of the souls of those who lost their lives at different points, particularly to different illnesses, and especially to COVID-19 virus.

Doherty said that his political career had been fulfilling in the only party he had ever been a member, the PDP.

He was once the Southwest Zonal Financial Secretary, the Organising Secretary and later Acting Vice-Chairman of the Southwest zone, before becoming the chairman in November 2019.

He expressed appreciations to all loyal executive members, the Local Government Chairmen’s Forum and various leaders and party members at the respective levels of the party structure for their support.

Doherty commended all members for tolerance and patience exhibited during his tenure.

He urged major stakeholders of the party to close ranks and show more love to its teeming members.

Doherty advised stakeholders to believe in themselves as it concerns resolving internal disagreements, rather than expecting party conflicts to be settled by leaders from other states.

“It is really embarrassing as leaders and elders of the party in Lagos State that we can’t resolve our differences internally and amicably without the intervention of external bodies.

“This shouldn’t have occurred at all if we as leaders had put the party first before considering our personal interests,’’ he stressed.

The chairman also called on national leaders of the party to lead by example by taking decisive disciplinary actions on erring members across the nation as stipulated in the party’s constitution.

According to him, though such action can have a short-term setback, it will definitely have long term positive effect on the psyche of members.

Doherty advised that all and sundry should extend the olive branch, ensue love, embrace forgiveness and togetherness as members of one great indivisible political family.

Aregbesola

Members of the Omoluabi Progressives, a political group loyal to former Osun State Governor Rauf Aregbesola, have announced their decision to leave the All Progressives Congress (APC).

In a statement released on Monday in Osogbo and signed by the group’s Organising and Publicity Secretary, Oluwaseun Abosede, the resolution was said to have been reached during the group’s monthly meeting in Ilesa, with stakeholders from all 332 wards in attendance.

Abosede cited several reasons for the group’s exit from the APC, including allegations of ostracism, suspension, and expulsion of members without fair hearing. He also noted the perceived neglect and marginalization of the group within the party, as well as dissatisfaction with the handling of internal crises, which he claimed contributed to APC’s poor performance in the last election cycle in Osun State.

“Members of the group were put to a voice vote by the leadership, and they unanimously affirmed their readiness to switch allegiance to another political platform ahead of the 2026 Osun governorship election,” Abosede said.

Speaking at the meeting, Aregbesola, the immediate past Minister of Interior, commended members for their dedication to integrity, character, and good governance. He described the group’s decision to leave the APC as the beginning of a new journey toward responsible leadership in Osun.

“I am indeed happy that all of you have spoken with one voice. A united front to lead the way to our collective victory in the journey ahead,” he said. “Our mission is to raise the level of prosperity of our dear state through responsible leadership. The path we have chosen is smooth, highly reassuring, and full of good tides that will propel Osun to greatness.”

Aregbesola urged members to remain steadfast, attract genuine allies, and prepare the Omoluabi Progressives for the challenges ahead. He assured them that ongoing efforts to reposition the group would soon yield positive results.

“We are open to all, regardless of political, religious, or socio-cultural affiliations. We have the numbers, strength, and political acumen to provide leadership that will make Osun the envy of its peers. By the grace of God, we shall succeed,” Aregbesola declared.

The Omoluabi Progressives’ departure signals a significant shift in Osun’s political landscape ahead of the next governorship election.
