Miraculous Rescue: Newborn Baby Survives Three Days in Pit Toilet After Mother’s Abandonment
In a remarkable turn of events, a newborn baby boy has been saved from a pit toilet after being abandoned there by his mother for three days. The heart-wrenching incident unfolded in Otuocha, situated within the Anambra East Local Government Area of Anambra State.
The Anambra Ministry of Women Affairs and Social Affairs shared the incredible tale of survival, revealing that the 20-year-old mother, identified as Nwaedoka Chidimma, hailing from Izzi in Ebonyi state, gave birth to the infant on Sunday, August 27, 2023. Tragically, Chidimma then chose to dispose of her own child in the pit toilet.
Esther Omesi, a farmer and a friend of Chidimma, provided insight into the sequence of events leading to the baby’s rescue. Apparently, Chidimma had sought shelter at Omesi’s residence temporarily due to a farming job. Suspicion arose on Sunday when Chidimma displayed unusual behaviour, citing stomach discomfort before retreating to the toilet.

Omesi recalled that Chidimma remained in the toilet for an extended period, emerging later covered in blood. Concerned, Omesi enlisted the help of a nurse, who tragically confirmed the absence of the baby. Believing that Chidimma had experienced a stillbirth, Omesi encouraged her to return to her family’s home and inform them of the distressing event.
However, the story took a miraculous twist on the morning of Tuesday, August 29. Astonishingly, the cries of a baby were heard emanating from the pit toilet. Acting swiftly, Omesi and others employed a ladder to rescue the newborn from the pit and promptly alerted the relevant authorities.
Upon being informed of the incident, Hon. Ify Obinabo, the Commissioner for Women and Social Welfare, took immediate action. She ensured the infant received necessary medical attention at Chukwuemeka Odumegwu Ojukwu Teaching Hospital Amaku Awka. Additionally, the responsible mother, Chidimma, was apprehended and taken into custody for her actions.
This heart-rending story serves as a reminder of the resilience of life, even in the face of such dire circumstances. It also underscores the crucial importance of swift and compassionate intervention to protect the most vulnerable members of our society.
