King Charles arrives in France to strengthen cross-channel relations

King Charles III commenced his inaugural state visit to France on Wednesday, emphasizing the enduring strength of the cross-Channel alliance amid post-Brexit political complexities.

Originally scheduled for March, this trip was intended to mark Charles’ first foreign state visit following his ascension to the throne after the passing of Queen Elizabeth II. However, it was postponed due to widespread protests and strikes in France, primarily in opposition to pension reforms.

The initial itinerary, encompassing the capital city of Paris and the southwestern city of Bordeaux, retains much of its ceremonial grandeur. This is a significant detail in a country that witnessed the abolition of its monarchy during the 1789 revolution, culminating in the execution of the king.

At Paris Orly airport, Prime Minister Elisabeth Borne extended a warm welcome to King Charles and Queen Camilla, with clear autumn skies blessing the occasion, as noted by an AFP correspondent.

Subsequently, they are set to be received by French President Emmanuel Macron and his wife Brigitte at the iconic Arc de Triomphe in central Paris. There, wreaths will be laid in honour of the fallen soldiers from both nations.

Following this, they will embark on a procession up the Champs-Elysees to the Elysee Palace aboard a Citroen DS7 convertible, accompanied by 136 members of the Republican Guard. Their meeting with Macron will take place at the palace.

In the evening, the Macrons will host a lavish state banquet at Versailles, the historic palace located to the west of the capital, synonymous with French royalty.

The menu, curated by renowned chef Anne-Sophie Pic, will feature exquisite dishes, including a starter of blue lobster, inspired by the culinary preferences of the “Sun King” Louis XIV.

Distinguished guests at this glittering event in the Hall of Mirrors will include Charlotte Gainsbourg, the accomplished actor and offspring of Serge Gainsbourg and Jane Birkin, along with Hugh Grant and the former French Arsenal football manager, Arsene Wenger.
