The Independent National Electoral Commission, INEC, in Lagos State has commenced biometric registration and capturing of applicants in the ongoing Continuous Voter Registration, CVR, exercise.

INEC Spokesman in Lagos, Femi Akinbiyi, disclosed this to newsmen on Monday.

According to him, the exercise is taking place at the INEC headquarters in Sabo, Yaba and all INEC offices in the 20 local government areas of the state.

Mr Akinbiyi noted that prospective voters, who have completed the online CVR pre-registration and those who have not done so could visit INEC offices in their areas to get captured.

He said: “Now, that the physical registration in the Continuous Voter Registration (CVR) has commenced, we want all Lagos residents that have applied online to come down for their biometrics.

“They should come and complete the exercise they started online by having their biometrics.

“Those that do not have Android phones to register can also come for registration at the INEC state office in Yaba and in any of our 20 local government area offices in Lagos State.

“Especially, we advise that those who can go online for pre-registration should do that to lessen the burden and reduce crowd at the various centres.

“The commission’s offices will be open between 9: 00 a.m. and 4:00 p.m. from Monday to Fridayevery week to attend to the applicants,’’ he added.

The spokesman said that the CVR exercise, which commenced on June 28 with the online pre-registration process, was to reduce congestion at the state and local government offices of the commission during the biometric capturing and physical registration.

Health: Nigeria needs N1trn annually to cater for vulnerable citizens

The Kano State Hospital Management Board has restated commitment to quality healthcare service delivery in the state.

The Executive Secretary of the board, Dr Mansur Nagoda stated this during the inauguration of the state-wide hospital inspection exercise, on Monday in Kano.

He said the board in collaboration with the ministry of health would inspect healthcare facilities in urban and rural areas of the state.

Nagoda said the exercise aimed at encouraging positive attitudinal change among medical workers, to ensure that interventions were properly utilised.

He said the exercise would also guard against alleged hoarding and diversion of medical commodities provided by the state government.

“We are also paying unscheduled visits to health facilities to mainly assess their sanitary conditions and see how the services are being rendered.

“The major issues we largely concentrate on will include checking of staff roster for all cadres to know professional relationships among staff to avoid unwanted rivalry,” he said.

Nagoda said the state government had rolled out free delivery kits; free accident and emergency items, free cleansing items for general sanitation of facilities and maintenance of proper hygienic condition, among workers.

The gesture, he said, would provide succour and improve the welfare of patients in the state.

Some of the facilities visited include Murtala Muhammad Specialists Hospital; Muhammad Abdullahi Wase Teaching Hospital, Sir Muhammad Sanusi Specialist Hospital, Sheik Muhammad Jidda General Hospital, and Yadakunya General Hospital.

2025 budget: Reps move to improve funding for NiMC, NYSC, NDA

Reps move to facilitate technical, vocational scholarship for Nigerian youths

The Deputy Spokesman for the House of Representatives, Rep. Philip Agbese (APC-Benue) says plans are ongoing to increase funding for some strategic agencies in the 2025 Appropriation Bill.

The agencies are National Identity Management Commission (NIMC) National Youth Service Corps (NYSC) and the Nigerian Defence Academy (NDA) among others.

Addressing newsmen in Abuja on Monday, Agbese that the agencies are considered very critical to the nation’s socio-economic development and have been pencilled down for improved funding in the 2025 fiscal year.

“We are making a case for improved funding for the National Identity Management Commission, the National Youth Service Corps, and the Nigerian Defence Academy in the 2025 budget proposal. There are other agencies of government that are likely to benefit from this too.

“NIMC has become a very important agency of government in the past few years. A lot of Nigerians may not know how critical the agency is but we cannot talk about a national data bank without empowering that commission.

“The ideal of the NYSC must be sustained and this informed the decision to demand adequate funding of the corps.

“At a time when terrorists continue to come up with new strategies despite the gallantry of our troops; we cannot but devise means to outwit them.

“One of the ways to do this is to improve the funding of the institutions charged with the mandate of building the capacity of our security personnel to tackle emerging security challenges.

“In all of these, we also realised that the budget envelope system is not enough to meet the capital expenditure needs of most of these agencies,” he said.

He said that the house is prepared to increase funding for Nigeria’s foreign missions under the Ministry of Foreign Affairs as well as the Ministry of Aviation.

Agbese urged Nigerians to stay optimistic as the Federal Government, with the support of the National Assembly, is working hard to make life enjoyable to the citizens within the shortest possible time.

He enjoined Nigerians to be hopeful as the current hardship being felt across the country will soon give way to national prosperity.
