Kano residents defy curfew, storm streets to celebrate NNPP victory

Despite a dawn-to-dusk curfew imposed by the Kano State Government to prevent a breakdown of law and order amid mounting tensions during the collation of results, residents have stormed the streets to celebrate the election of the governorship candidate of the New Nigeria People’s Party (NNPP), Abba Kabir.

Kabir scored 1,019,602 votes to defeat his closest contender, Nasir Gawuna of the All Progressives Congress (APC) who polled 890,705 votes.

“That Yusuf Kabir of NNPP having satisfied the requirement of the law is hereby declared the winner and is returned elected,” the Returning Officer, Prof Ahmad Ibrahim declared.

Abba Yusuf of NNPP defeated his closest rival, the state Deputy Governor, Alhaji Nasiru Gawuna of All Progressives Congress (APC).

Yusuf polled 1,019, 602 votes against Gawuna’s 892,705.

The residents chanted victory songs and wielded placards with various inscriptions as they paraded in motorcades on the streets.

Some of the placards read: “Alhamdulillah Kano is for Kwankwaso” and “Support for Abba Gida-Gida for progress of the state,” among others.

Displays by motorcyclists and tricyclists added colour to the celebrations.
