International Human Rights Day: Three journalists bag human rights award

The National Human Rights Commission (NHRC) has honoured a correspondent of the News Agency of Nigeria (NAN), Obiageli  Nwapi and two other journalists for their outstanding contributions to human rights reportage.

The others are Sunday Ejike of Tribune and Lukuman Babalola of Emporium reporters (online).

The awards were given at a dinner and award night organised by NHRC to celebrate the 2022 International Human Rights day in Abuja.

The event was the last in the series of activities organised to mark the 16 Days of Activism against Gender-based Violence.

The award was organised towards the commemoration of the 75th anniversary of the Universal Declaration of Human Rights (UDHR) in 1948.

Speaking on the award,  Mrs Fatimah Agwai Mohammed,  Deputy Director of Corporate Affairs and External Linkages, appreciated the journalists for contributing to human rights protection through their work.

The categories of the award are,  long service reporter of the year,  explanatory reporter of the year and human rights promotion reporter of the year.

Nwapi received the explanatory reporter of the year award.

Nwapi was recognised for paying attention to details and going full length to capture all angles of any human rights story.

Ejike of Tribune Newspaper was awarded the long service for staying faithfully with the commission over the years.

Babalola of Emporium Reporters who got the human rights promotion reporter of the year was said to have demonstrated immeasurable interest and passion for human rights issues.

Some members of staff of the commission and policemen were also awarded.
