The US Reiterates its commitment to expanding Covid Vaccination in Nigeria and other Countries

By Derrick Bangura.
The US has expressed its commitment to assisting Nigeria and other countries worldwide in fighting the ongoing COVID-19 outbreak.
The United States Ambassador, Mary Beth Leonard, spoke at the Flag-Off of the COVID-19 Mass Vaccination Campaign in Imo State, which was hosted by Governor Hope Uzodinma. She said the US Global Action Plan will help coordinate areas that the world has identified as the most significant barriers to ending the COVID-19 pandemic.
The initiative aims to improve COVID-19 vaccine access and uptake among Imo State residents.
The United States has recommitted to increasing vaccination access, strengthening vaccine trust by addressing misinformation, improving last-mile vaccine delivery, and supporting health workers in their efforts to vaccinate individuals, according to Leonard.
“Part of this commitment is shown in the United States’ contribution of approximately 21.8 million doses of COVID-19 vaccines to Nigeria, accounting for over 35% of overall donations,” she stated.
The commitment of the US government is shown in the technological and logistical support provided to guarantee that vaccines reach all Americans who require them. The United States’ support also focuses on getting vaccines into the hands of people who need them, so that no immunizations go unused when millions of people need them.
“No one will be safe from the pandemic until everyone is safe, and the only way to do that is through safe and effective vaccines,” Leonard added.
Leonard took advantage of the occasion to thank the US CDC, USAID, and the US Department of Defense’s Walter Reed Army Program for their contributions to Nigeria’s vaccination deployment. She also commended the Catholic Caritas Foundation of Nigeria (CCFN), a US CDC implementing partner, for their critical involvement in increasing vaccine access and uptake in Imo and other states.
Governor Uzodinma was praised for his efforts to make vaccines available. She urged everyone who was eligible to come out and get vaccinated in order to protect the Imo people’s health and well-being. She urged community leaders and other gatekeepers to work together with the government to protect the health of the people in the state. “We need your help to get the people of Imo vaccinated and protected against COVID-19.” “The United States Mission in Nigeria stands with you.”

Benue IDPs block highway, demand return to ancestral homes

Vehicular movement along the Yelwata axis of the Benue–Nasarawa highway was brought to a standstill on Wednesday as Internally Displaced Persons, IDPs, staged a protest, demanding immediate return to their ancestral homes.
The protesters, believed to be victims of persistent attacks by suspected herdsmen, blocked both lanes of the busy highway for several hours, chanting “We want to go back home”.
The protest caused disruption, leaving hundreds of motorists and passengers stranded.
Eyewitnesses said the displaced persons, many of whom have spent years in overcrowded IDP camps, are expressing deep frustration over the government’s delay in restoring security to their communities.
“We have suffered enough. We want to return to our homes and farms,” one of the protesters told reporters at the scene.
Security personnel were reportedly deployed to monitor the situation and prevent any escalation, though tensions remained high as of press time.
Efforts to reach the Benue State Emergency Management Agency, SEMA, and other relevant authorities for comment were unsuccessful.

NNPCL reveals decision not to sell Port Harcourt refinery

The Nigerian National Petroleum Company Limited, NNPCL has officially decided not to sell the Port Harcourt Refining Company.
NNPCL has, instead said it is committed to conducting an extensive rehabilitation of the facility and ensuring its continued operation.
During a company-wide town hall meeting held at the NNPC Towers in Abuja, Bayo Ojulari, the Group Chief Executive Officer of NNPC Ltd, announced the decision regarding the future of the nation’s most significant state-owned refining asset, putting an end to weeks of speculation.
A statement by NNPCL reads, “The Nigerian National Petroleum Company Limited has officially ruled out the sale of the Port Harcourt Refining Company, reaffirming its commitment to completing high-grade rehabilitation and retention of the plant.
“The ongoing review indicates that the earlier decision to operate the Port Harcourt refinery, before full completion of its rehabilitation, was ill-informed and subcommercial.
”Although progress is being made on all three, the emerging outlook calls for more advanced technical partnerships to complete and high-grade the rehabilitation of the Port Harcourt refinery.
”Thus, selling is highly unlikely as it would lead to further value erosion.”
