2023: I will recruit more personnel in security agencies if elected – Atiku

If elected president in 2023, former Vice-President Atiku Abubakar said he would increase the number of men and women in security agencies as part of efforts to combat instability in the country.
Atiku Abubakar, a presidential candidate on the People’s Democratic Party (PDP) platform, revealed this on Sunday night in Akure during a consultation meeting with party delegates and officials.
He also stated that providing more manpower and equipment to security organizations was one of the greatest ways to address the current security concerns.
He thanked the people of Ondo State for putting their faith in him and voting for him as the PDP’s candidate in the 2019 election.
Atiku urged the delegates to vote for him at the party’s primary slated for May 28.
In his words, “My number one priority is to unify the people of this country. How do I unify the people of this country? I will be fair to every part of this country.
“I will give a sense of belonging to every part of this country. Every part of this country will feel they are part of this country.
“It is that unity that will enable us again to live as one nation, one people under God.
“Every part of this country is dealing with one aspect of insecurity or the other; I will be very tough on law and order.
“I will increase the number of policemen in this country. I will equip them, I will also increase the number of the armed forces, equip them very well, just like we did from 1999 to 2015.
“It is only when you secure the country, there is peace, there is law and order, you can deal with economic challenges.”
The former vice-president also said he would provide adequate funding for education, saying “education is key to everything”.
“We can only achieve this, if you as delegates support me and I win the nomination, and I go ahead to win the election.
“Atiku Abubakar is a household name in Ondo State, which is why you gave me over 35,000 vote margin in the last election. You deserve the best in this country,” he said.
The aspirant dismissed insinuations in some quarters that he was not strong enough to lead the country, stating that he has been travelling across the Southwestern states by road to meet delegates in the last couple of days.
Atiku also said he would support devolving more powers to states and local government so that they could deal with their problems effectively.
Speaking, Ondo State PDP Chairman, Hon. Fatai Adams, assured Atiku that the state delegates would “compensate” him with their votes.

Just hours before the burial of former President Muhammadu Buhari, heartfelt tributes have continued to pour in from beneficiaries of his many charitable deeds, with many describing him as a man who never turned his back on the needy.
Speaking to the News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) on Tuesday, Aminu Daura, a respected community elder, recalled how Buhari consistently provided foodstuffs during Ramadan for families, friends, widows, and orphans in his hometown.
“He never made noise about it, but many homes had food on their tables during fasting period because of him,” Daura said.
Abdullahi Sani, a physically-challenged man who received a tricycle from the Buhari Foundation in 2021, was overcome with emotion while speaking to NAN.
“I can move around and feed my family today because of Baba Buhari. I pray to Allah to reward him for giving hope to people like me,” he said, in tears.
Hajiya Fatima Yahaya, another resident, remembered Buhari’s acts of kindness during festive seasons.
“Even after he left office, his aides ensured that the usual support still reached us every year. He always remember his people,” she said, referring to his distribution of Sallah rams and food items to indigent families during Eid celebrations.
Other residents of Daura also shared memories of how the late former president quietly paid school fees and medical bills for struggling families, actions rarely publicized.

On Monday night, Imams across various mosques in Daura held special Qur’anic recitations, praying for the forgiveness of Buhari’s sins and his eternal peace.
The Chief Imam of Daura Central Mosque, Sheikh Musa Kofar Barau, described Buhari as a humble leader whose legacy of service and compassion would remain alive in the hearts of the people.
Buhari is scheduled to be buried later on Tuesday in his hometown of Daura, Katsina State, in line with Islamic rites. The community is bracing to welcome thousands of mourners from across Nigeria and beyond.
